Empower Women to Participate in Community Life

The project "Empowering women to participate in community life" is funded by Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency and will be implemented during 2010-2011. It seeks to strengthen good governance at local level by encouraging and strengthening womens skills to participate in the decision-making process and involve in community-based initiatives. To respond to this issue, the project will work through rural nongovernmental organizations active in the field of gender equality, as well as with groups of women from rural localities who have leadership abilities. Eligible NGOs will benefit of capacity building activities and grants to implement initiatives that will contribute to the empowerment of women in rural communities. It is important that by the end of the project women from different communities understood how valuable their presence in the decision-making processes and other leadership positions is. In line with these activities, a leadership program will be organized in three editions, which will have as target women from rural areas who are currently involved in politics or have potential for becoming community leaders. The leadership program will be oriented towards helping women from rural communities acquire skills of future political and civic leaders. The project seeks to support financially at least 10 nongovernmental organizations and develop a network of 60 women as social and political leaders.
